A Home Away From Home
1st-2nd grade, 90 minutes
Macculloch Hall is the historic home of George and Louisa Macculloch and their family. Their family lived in the house for five generations, from 1810-1949. This program explores how the Macculloch family lived in this home in the early 1800s and compares how life is the same or different today. Students will make their own calling card and create their own family tree. In addition, they will compare historic and modern traditions and holidays celebrated.

Lessons from the Garden
2nd-3rd grade, 1.5 - 2 hours
Going green! While touring the restored historic garden, this program explores the ways that the Macculloch family reused and recycled everyday materials. Educators share about different soil types while participants plant seeds to take home and learn about the historic vegetable garden at Macculloch Hall. Participants will have the opportunity to handle earthworms while learning about vermicomposting to make rich soil.

Meeting the Maccullochs
2nd-4th grade, 45-60 minutes
What was life like for George Macculloch and his family in the early 1800s in Morristown, and how do we know? Learn about the Macculloch family and Macculloch Hall through primary source letters and objects. Try using a dipping pen and ink to copy a letter written by Mr. George Macculloch.

Building the Morris Canal
4th-5th grade, 45-60 minutes
Find out why George Macculloch was the “father of the Morris Canal” and why New Jersey needed a canal. This program explores how canals worked, what life was like on a canal, and what resources were being transported. Students investigate ways goods were transported in the 1800s and examine 19th-century photos of the Morris Canal.
