Assumption School Fourth Graders Celebrate Tradition at Macculloch Hall Historical Museum

Assumption School Fourth Graders create holiday ornaments for Macculloch Hall Historical Museum

By Executive Director Kathleen Bartlett

The holiday season began early for Assumption School’s fourth graders in Morristown, NJ, as they continued a cherished tradition at Macculloch Hall Historical Museum (MHHM). On their recent visit, Curator of Education and Community Engagement Karina Filipowski assisted students in crafting two Christmas ornaments—one to take home and another to adorn the museum’s main Christmas tree in the elegant drawing room.

This year’s activity was especially meaningful, marking three major milestones:

  • 175th anniversary of Assumption School
  • 75th anniversary of Macculloch Hall Historical Museum
  • 35th year of Assumption students creating ornaments for MHHM

The ornaments reflected a patriotic theme, designed with red, white, and blue paper in honor of the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States. Each piece featured silhouettes of famous historical figures, blending creativity with a sense of heritage.

After completing their crafts, fourth-grade teachers Ms. Matthews and Mrs. Klocksin and the students toured the museum and explored the current exhibit on Thomas Nast’s work, which highlights President Grover Cleveland—the only U.S. president born in New Jersey and the first president to serve non-consecutive terms. The visit offered a unique opportunity to connect art, history, and tradition.

Fourth grader Kenny shared, “I thought the museum was really interesting, especially the living room and dining room which were very unique. I also thought the paintings were very cool.”

Fourth grader Hadley added, “I’ve never been here before. I really liked all of the art, and I liked to see how different everything in the house was from today.”

Holiday decorations at MHHM will be on display starting December 6 with the Museum’s holiday season opening “Home for the Holidays: A Macculloch Hall Christmas.” The Museum will remain open every Saturday and Sunday from 12 PM to 4 PM throughout December. Visitors can enjoy the festive atmosphere and appreciate the contributions of Assumption’s young artists to this enduring tradition.

Thank you to everyone who participated in this cherished tradition. We can’t wait to share the joy of the holidays with you at Macculloch Hall Historical Museum!
