Gallant Color Bearer

"A Gallant Color-Bearer" depicts the 10th New York Regiment engaged in battle with Confederate soldiers. In this black and white engraving, a standing Union soldier catches in his arms the wounded color-bearer who is falling backwards while the unwounded soldier reaches for the American flag to prevent it from falling to the ground. On the left, a kneeling soldier looks up and reaches to break the flag’s fall. This engraving pays homage to the service and sacrifices made by Union soldiers, and the dedication to the flag that they served.
