Part Time Contract Teaching Artist

Working under the supervision of the Associate Curator of Education and Community Engagement the Summer 2025 Part Time Contract Teaching Artist at Macculloch Hall Historical Museum will lead art experiences for children and young adult audiences in the historic garden. The art experience is an integral part of the Museum’s summer garden program, Make it! Grow it! Learn it!, which incorporates history, science, environmental awareness, and the arts.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Designing and teaching art lessons that encourage and support all students
  • Generating art supply lists and sources for materials
  • Communicating regularly with the Associate Curator of Education and Community Engagement
  • Arriving a half hour before each program is scheduled to assist with set up
  • Facilitate art lessons onsite at MHHM and offsite at community partner locations as needed
  • Assisting with clean up and program reviews after each program
  • Attending two planning meetings and one wrap up meeting at the end the season
  • Contributing to a positive environment by working collaboratively with MHHM staff and community partners’ staff and sharing feedback to improve participants’ experiences.
  • Adapting activities based on participant feedback and as needed to accommodate different learning styles.

The successful candidate will have an advanced degree in art and education; five years’ experience teaching arts professionally in formal or informal learning environments; have enthusiasm for working with children; excellent verbal and written communication skills; work well independently and as part of a team; demonstrate punctuality, dependability, and flexibility; bi-lingual in English and Spanish is encouraged.

Compensation: $150 per program; $50 per planning/wrap up meeting. Typical summer schedule consists of two to four morning programs per week primarily in late June and July.

About Macculloch Hall Historical Museum (MHHM)

Established in 1950 as Morristown’s community museum by W. Parsons Todd (1877-1976), MHHM preserves and interprets its historic house and gardens, unparalleled collection of the work of political cartoonist Thomas Nast (1840-1902), fine and decorative arts collections and Macculloch family archives, inspiring visitors to experience everyday American history where it happened. The museum’s unique historic setting, its period rooms and professional galleries excite and educate visitors of all ages, connecting present to past in a dynamic cultural environment. On site, online and through outreach, MHHM serves local, state, national and international communities.

MHHM employs a dynamic staff of four full-time professionals and has an annual operating budget of less than $750,000 (including capital improvements). The museum is supported by a dedicated 12-member volunteer board of trustees and more than 20 volunteers yearly.
