This week communities around the world celebrated recognizing that “museums are an important means of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding, cooperation and peace among peoples.”
More than 37,000 museums in 158 countries and territories participated. 2021’s theme is the “Future of Museums.” Museums speculated what they could look like in the future and what roles they might play in solving some of today’s challenges.
2020’s International Museum Day went entirely digital in response to Covid-19. #IMD2020 activities reached more than 83 million users on social media just on May 18 alone! We will soon learn if #IMD2021 will set a new record as museums continue to build relationships with visitors of all ages, respond to needs in our communities, and reach new audiences.
